Feminist Theory Introduction

Feminist Theory is an aspect of considering feminism as having been based on socio-
phenomenon issues rather than biological or scientific. It appreciates gender inequality, analyzes
the societal roles played by feminists in a bid to promote the interests, issues and rights of
women in the society. It is also based on the assumption that women play subsidiary roles in the
society. The whole idea of feminism has however experienced hurdles in the form of
stereotyping by the wider society. This paper tries to examine some of the effects of stereotypes
that feminism goes through, what other philosophers say and the way forward towards ending
To begin with, according to many philosophers, it would be wise to argue that stereotyping on feminism especially by men is not based on their biological make up but rather on their culture. Culture has imparted in men some unique beliefs in specific thoughts, feeling and behavior towards women as whole and feminists in particular. This notion has however been criticized by angry women philosophers like Jean Grimshaw who argue that just being borne a man is not a sufficient enough reason to criticize women feminists.
Other feminists who have criticized this stereotyping by men in the form of philosophical connotations argue that philosophy in itself has got a lot of flaws. According to Deleuze and Guattari (1994), philosophy is not reflective and neither communicates nor contemplates. This could be in response to those philosophers who tend to dwell on unrelated topics and ignore a whole subject on women empowerment. A case in point is the approach by “The Man of Reason” concept which asserts that the relationship between man and woman is distinct. This concept nonetheless puts more emphasis on the reason and means of the production and sexuality of a woman rather that the idea of a woman. To this extent it is clear that the philosophy was intentionally aimed to alienate women (Deleuze & Guattari, 1994) .
This portrays that such philosophers are not informed by reason or any rationality but by their lifestyles that is brought about by their culture. Men, being the majority of philosophers selectively chose topics that ignore the welfare and plight of women but those that are related to their lifestyles. All these philosophies only encourage stereotyping on not only feminists but also women at large. In fact partly due to the actions of some of these male philosophers, the society has adopted some universal stereotypes on feminism. The kinds of these stereotyping include assumptions that sometimes border on myths that feminists are all the same, hate men, unattractive and angry. Feminists have also been regarded as lesbians, bra burners and sex haters. They also hate staying at home.
These stereotyping have got implications that might work to erode the gains of the affirmative actions that are slowly seeing the light of the day in recent times. It conversely also has some positive effects on the victims. Some of the effects of this stereotyping include low performance by the victims of the negative stereotyping. From the moment when the stereotyping happened to a woman to through her times at work and at home, her work performance would likely be affected. Even at school, women who are stereotyped are likely to perform poorly academically.
The ability of a human being to regulate his or herself is very limited. Whether there is a change or alteration of the environment, this change does not very much contribute to the positive influence of a victim of stereotyping.
Stereotyping also contributes to slow mental processing by the human brains. This in essence leads to slow and hesitant thinking besides portrayal of much laxity in situations that might require quick and rapid actions. A stereotyped individual or group of people acquires some attitudes that might limit her think positively about the abuser.
Stereotyping can also lead to intimidation of the victim and this has the risk of preventing the woman into entering into the field or activities that are likely to create progress and success to the victim. This in essence inhibits the emotional growth of an individual. At the same time it ensures the adoption of inaccurate opinions by the victims, impaired performance and wrong judgment.
On the other hand, stereotyping on the women provides them with opportunities of evaluating and seeking relevant information as concerns the actors of the vice. This leads to the attainment and arrival at more accurate conclusions (Conaway, 2005).
On relationships, stereotyping has played a number of roles in separating couples.
Different societies have stereotyped the roles of men and women in a relationship. For instance, some societies advocate that men’s role in marriages is the provision of the basic needs, security and reproduction. Women’s roles on the other hand are reproduction and doing other domestic chores. Men are also allowed to be polygamous and not women. This provides a leeway for infidelity by men in a relationship (Gentile, 2008). Stereotyping also injure the ability to socialize with other people especially for those victims who previously underwent serious stereotyping experiences. This might be due to fear or intimidation by the victim of negative prejudice.

J asserts that the whole aspect of stereotyping is brought about by the philosophical works of some male writers. According to her, philosophical works are normative. In other words, they should not only give assumptions on the manner in which people would be but reflect on the view that individuals are atomistically self contained.
Stereotyping is like a belief. Belief are specific to particular cultures. But according to feminist Mary C. Waters, sharing common beliefs and practices should never be a pre requisite for advancing stereotyping ideologies by either gender (Gentile, 2008).

How Feminism Can Assist In The Process Of Doing Oppression
In order to limit the oppression that women are currently going through as a result
stereotyping, feminists should adapt a number of measures that are geared towards liberating
women. The first step is the watering down of the stereotypic ideas that have always been biased
towards women in the society. The reasons that have made the feminists to be labeled with such
amount of stereotype should be taken into consideration. Perhaps the approach they give to
feminism is that of an extreme radicalism (Conaway, 2005).
By asserting that male domination over women is the root cause of the entire stereotype
over women, feminists not only portray men as aggressors but also as brutal and insensitive. This
therefore calls for an all inclusive liberal and rational approach. The creation of institutions that
would aim to assist both genders understand the value and dangers of propagating stereotypes
against the opposite gender would be a good course. Feminists must not also strive to gain undue
mileage by appearing to be extreme radicals and derogatory to men at the expense of the plight
and welfare of women. (Conaway, 2005)
