THE UK WINE INDUSTRIES
Wine from the United Kingdom is classified either as English wine or Welsh wine. This is in reference to the origins; England or Wales. The United Kingdom is mainly a consumer of the product but does not produce wine in large quantities.
Soils in England have better facilitated the growing of grapes used to produce sparkling wine and the climate is warm enough. The Wines Standards Board reported that there are over 450 vineyards producing wine all over England. In Wales, there are currently 17 operational vineyards.
British Wine describes a drink made in Britain by fermenting grape juice. Wine was introduced by the Romans into the UK but at the time, the wine was mostly used as communion wine for the Eucharist. For many years the UK was a great consumer of Italian wines such as Bordeaux.
The Methuen Treaty of 1703 however imposed high duties on French wine forcing Britain’s consumers to shift to wine from Spain and Portugal. Due to the World Wars, the wine sector suffered a great blow since the need for food crops was higher than that of grapes.
The start of the wine culture was in 1952 when Mr. John Edginton planted his first experimental commercial grape vines. Today, these vines are considered the oldest surviving commercial wine grapes in the UK. Since then, the wine industry has experienced its ups and downs but there is currently more and better industries producing wine in the UK.
The UK wine industry is now recognized as a premium wine-producing region and has won many prestigious awards.
