Your answer should discuss and critically evaluate the chosen phenomenon under the
light of a relevant theory taught in the module. I have provided detailed suggestions further

examples on Blackboard with regards to structure and answer type, etc. (with different

Assessment details and Marking Criteria/scheme
The assessment is designed to test student’s knowledge and critical judgement to key
accounting theories. Students will work autonomously, analyse and discuss the key issues
around the chosen question within the relevant theoretical context. The written work must
communicate the analysis, arguments and conclusions clearly (please refer to Learning
Objectives 1 to 8 of the Module Handbook).
Structure and Presentation (20%)
• Clear Executive Summary/Abstract:
• Clear introduction with background information about the chosen phenomenon
• Chapters have suggested titles, and there is logical flow between paragraphs
• References are cited and listed correctly
• Documentation standard (word processing, structure, use of language)
• Appendices, tables, etc. are attached and used appropriately
Literature review (40%)
• Appropriate arguments/evidence – against and for in the extant literature
• Well balanced (giving fair chance to opposing views) theoretical explanations
Student’s own argument and opinion (30%)
• Argument(s) is critical and within the context of a relevant theory
• Opinion/debate generated by the student is realistic and makes sense
• Opinion/debate is consistent with empirical and or anecdotal evidence
• The student provides empirical/anecdotal evidence to support her/his argument
from relevant sources such as peer reviewed article(s)
• Student shows independent thought (whether the student generates new and
innovative ideas for the phenomenon that can add to existing knowledge and
