Early assignment submissions are welcomed and encouraged!
Your first paper this semester will be an album review. You are encouraged to discuss issues of meaning and significance, identity, social themes, etc., but please make sure you include technical descriptions of what you hear (see section 3, below). All outside sources should be properly cited (information provided below).
How to structure your paper (100 Points Total):
Introduction (1 paragraph) – 20 points
Name of musician/band
Name of CD/Album
Genre of music
Initial Impressions – What is your reaction to the music after the first
Musician/Band Background (1 paragraph, and remember to cite your sources) – 20 points
What do you know about this band/artist? Have they been around a long time or are they just breaking onto the scene? What is their background?
CD/Album (the bulk of your paper) – 40 points
Is there an overall theme for this CD? How would you describe it?
Use musical terminology from lecture and your textbook to describe each track on the album (or at least most of them!). This portion of the paper should be very technical.
If this album contains lyrics: What is your opinion of them? Provide a few examples.
Overall impressions, opinions, and final comments (no more than 1 paragraph) – 20 points
Which tracks stand out? Why?
Which tracks sag? Why?
Keep in mind that grammar and construction account for a portion of your grade. Use academic writing, avoid contractions and the passive voice.
All written work must be formatted using:
Times New Roman size 12 font
Double-spaced paragraphs (not your document header) and a minimum of 3 full pages – maximum 4 full pages.
Margins set to 1″ on all four sides.
Only .doc, .docx, and .pdf files will be accepted. The system will not allow you to submit files saved under any other extension. Should you need to use a University computer to make this happen, there are plenty of labs available for your use.
Please refer to your syllabus for information regarding academic integrity and responsible writing habits. As stated above, please write in a formal, academic style with proper citation of sources. You may use any citation style you prefer (MLA, Chicago, etc.) but please be consistent.
Create a paper that is clear, concise, and musically informed using relevant musical vocabulary.
Plagiarism will not be overlooked. All submissions will be checked with TurnItIn.
