In 2019, the MoMA reopened after a months-long renovation. The new renovation included a new studio for performance, process and time-based art; a new educational space, and free street-level galleries to better connect the museum to the city. Perhaps most innovative is the new organization of the gallery space and how work is exhibited.
In the words of Director Glenn Lowry:
The galleries will offer a variety of propositions—some devoted to a single artist or idea, some thematic, some focused on a single medium—arranged in a loosely chronological manner. Taken together they will offer a collage-like approach to the history of modern art. These galleries, and the stories within, will change frequently, underscoring the fact that there are an almost infinite number of ideas to be explored through the Museum’s holdings.
1) Read the reviews of the “new” MoMA linked below.
2) Write a 2-page summary of the way in which the “new” MoMA is re-presenting modern art in the galleries in the manner outlined by Glenn Lowry in the above paragraph.
