Chasing the American Dream

The American Dream Project

The Final Project for this course consists of either a more traditional research, argumentative essay OR a project of some kind. There are three options for developing and submitting your Final Project. You must choose one of them.

Option No. 1: The first option is to write a traditional, analytical, academic paper with standard references and citations. While you have a great deal of latitude in choosing your approach and stating your theme with respect to The American Dream, you do not have a great deal of latitude with respect to the format of the paper. You should choose above all a topic in which you are interested. If you are interested in it, then so, too, will your audience likely be interested. However, you must also identify a theme and thesis (argument) that is intellectually significant and write persuasively. Choose an issue or a problem with which you are wrestling… More paper details are available in the syllabus.

Semester Essay: Over the course of the term you will write one major paper (between 10 -14 double spaced pages; worth 25% of your semester grade) during the latter half of the course. This essay should demonstrate your ability to perform a close reading on one or more texts as well as require a more sustained literary and/or cultural analysis. You will be expected to incorporate significant outside academic and other credible research in to the longer, second essay. (Wikipedia and like sources, although often a god starting point, are not acceptable unto themselves.) We will discuss strategies for writing on literature in class. The essay is due on the date set forth in the Course Schedule, but you should approach the longer paper as a semester-long project. Late papers will be painful and will be lowered by one letter grade per business day late. A detailed assignment sheet will be distributed.

All papers should be typed in a standard 12-point font, double-spaced, numbered and stapled, with one-inch margins on all sides. In the top left-hand corner, type out your name, the course name and section, and the assignment due date. Be sure to cite all sources correctly using MLA format and attach a References page. Papers that do not meet these formatting requirements will lose points.

Your final draft will be a finished, typed product that is the result of much reading, revising, researching, revising, thinking, writing, revising, editing, revising, and proofreading. A final version must show marked improvement and revision over any previous draft(s). Your essay will be a complete statement that sets forth a clearly articulated thesis and purpose, supports the thesis with substantial evidence and a well-reasoned argument, presents its ideas and information in a logical progression, adheres to the rules of grammar and punctuation, and is fluently written.
