Case Study One:
George (He/Him) is a 22-year-old-man diagnosed with bipolar disorder 6 months ago. On
admission to the Emergency Department, George stated that he has taken six times the
usual dose of his lithium carbonate immediate release (6000mg) over the last two days.
Medical records data indicate that subsequent to lithium carbonate overdose George has
developed polyuria, polydipsia, proteinuria, and hypervolemia and has now been diagnosed
with acute renal failure.
a) Explain why George has developed polyuria, polydipsia, proteinuria, and
hypovolaemia following overdose with lithium carbonate.

Case Study Two:
Kate (She/Her) is a 48-year-old woman who has been admitted with Spontaneous Coronary
Artery Dissection diagnosed after a coronary angiography. Kate started to experience chest
pain about three days ago but initially ignored it as she thought it may be due to her anxiety.
She has a recent history of three days of chest pain. She has a medical history of anxiety
and hypertension. Her vital signs included blood pressure 180/93, heart rate 73, respiratory
rate 23 breaths per minute, Spo2 96%. ECG demonstrates sinus rhythm without ST
elevation. Laboratory results revealed an elevated troponin level. On arrival to the
emergency department, she was administered sublingual glyceryl trinitrate

Case Study Three
Chad (They/Them) is a 16-year-old with 3rd degree burns from a cooking accident to their
anterior left forearm. Chad frying bacon when the fat from the bacon caught fire. To
extinguish the fire, Chad dumped water on it, but this exploded, scalding her left forearm.
Chad is an asthmatic, well controlled with a preventer and has no other relevant clinical
history. Chad is admitted to the burns unit you are working on.
a) Discuss which layers of the skin are likely to be damaged by third degree burn
and how this may impact skin function and scar formation.

Case Study Four:
Yvette (She/Her), a 55-year-old woman, has experienced confusion and headache as well
as fatigue over the last four hours post fall and head strike. On arrival at her local
emergency department, she became unconscious. Her GCS is 8 (E2, V2, M4) her
respiration rate is 15 breaths per minute and irregular, radial pulse is 50 and BP is 210/70.
An urgent CT scan of her brain finds a large left subdural hematoma.
a. Yvette’s has a left sided Subdural hematoma. Describe the function and
location of the meninges in relation to other structures and propose where
this bleed may be located.
