Topic: Postpartum depression. You write an experience as a nurse using Jackie story

LEARN Reflective Note (20%)
NUR 201 – Summer, 2021

Please note: This assignment is to be 3 pages maximum, double-spaced! I will not read past 3 pages. Use APA format: Double-spaced, 12 font, one inch margins.

The goal of this assignment is to:

o Engage in self-reflection so that you can understand an event or situation better and understand why it was significant for you
o Learn to apply theory to practice by using high-quality peer-reviewed literature and
o Use your new knowledge to inform your nursing practice and grow as a nurse.

You will reflect on the scenario posted for you by your instructor. Your scenario will be different from the scenario the other section is reflecting on. Be sure you are reflecting on the correct scenario.

How will you do this? You will use the LEARN process. Please use each of these categories to organize your writing:
o L – Look back on a situation or an event that you observed/engaged with in the scenario.
o Describe it briefly (1-2 sentences). Pick something specific.
o EXAMPLE:
 Incorrect: The scenario I am reflecting on is about a nurse taking care of a patient who had postpartum depression. (this is too general)
 Correct: Looking back on the scenario about postpartum depression, I observed the nurse using non-verbal communication to build a therapeutic relationship. (this is specific. I know from this sentence that you will be focusing on non-verbal communication in the nurse-client therapeutic relationship)

o E – Elaborate on what you saw and why it made you feel the way it did.
o What exactly happened in the scenario that made you choose to reflect on this aspect of the scenario?
o If you are discussing a specific event, what were some of your initial thoughts and feelings? If you are discussing a situation, what are (were) some of your predominant thoughts and feelings?
o What surprised you or affected you?
o EXAMPLE
 Incorrect: The nurse took good care of her patient and it made me feel good to see their interaction. (this is generic and does not elaborate on what actually happened, does not describe the scenario and “made me feel good” doesn’t give me a sense of how or why you felt that way).
 Correct: When the nurse asked the patient how she was feeling, the nurse’s facial expression was warm, which was evidenced by her smiling and making eye contact. If I was a patient, I would feel comfortable opening up to that nurse. I think the nurse made the patient feel safe and cared for. (This is specific, tells me more about the situation, and shows me specifically what evoked a reaction in you personally).

o A – Analyze: This is where you will apply THEORY to PRACTICE.
o Consider what you saw in the scenario, how it made you feel.
o Now turn to the nursing literature. Find out if your initial thoughts and feelings are backed by the evidence. If so, what does the evidence say? If not, what does the literature say that is different?
o Use AT LEAST one credible journal article (Seneca Libraries) AND one credible website (ie RNAO, CNO). The article must be current (less than 7 years old). Make sure it is a NURSING journal (not medical journal). Make sure your writing includes APA format citations.
o Examples:
 Looking back (L) on the scenario about postpartum depression, I noticed that the nurse used non-verbal communication to build a therapeutic relationship. When the nurse asked the patient how she was feeling, the nurse’s facial expression was warm, which she showed by smiling and making eye contact. If I was a patient, I would feel comfortable opening up to that nurse. I think the nurse made the patient feel safe and cared for (E).To analyze the scenario further (A), I looked in the literature and found out that non-verbal communication is even more important when building a therapeutic relationship with patients than the words you say (Jones, 2017). The College of Nurses of Ontario (2018) explain that nurses who use non-verbal communication are three times more likely to have their patients open up to them and share personal information which can help them to plan more effective care.
 What I have done in this example is explained what happened in my scenario (L), explained what I felt about it (E), and then turned to the literature to find out how my initial thoughts and feelings compare to what is evidenced in the nursing literature (A). In this case, the literature backed up my belief that use of non-verbal communication is important when building a relationship with my patient. But maybe you will find that the literature does NOT back up what you initially felt or believed – and that’s ok!
o R – Revise your approach
o In this section you will explain how your new understanding of the scenario, which you gained by looking at the nursing literature, will help you to revise your own approach to nursing care. You will need to cite your literature again in this section.
o Think about the following questions: what would I do differently now that I know how the literature explains the phenomenon I am discussing? What would I do the same? What questions do I still need answered? What challenges might I have in changing the way
o Examples:
 As a new nurse, I am worried that I will have trouble using non-verbal communication to make my patients comfortable, since I will be nervous when I meet my patients. However, reading the article by Jones (2017), has re-enforced the importance of “making eye contact, smiling, and using therapeutic touch” (p. 217) to build a strong nurse-patient relationship. For that reason, I will practice my non-verbal communication skills on friends and family so that I can use this strategy when I eventually work with patients in a clinical setting.
 As you can see, I have reflected on what I saw in the scenario as well as what the literature has told me. I have shared a barrier to practicing using this evidence-based tool (non-verbal communication), and I have shown that I have reflected on how I can revise my approach in order to implement the evidence-based practice.

o N – New perspective / direction
o What is the most significant learning that has taken place?
o How will this reflection influence and inform your future nursing practice? (Important! Do not omit!)
o You may choose to use citations here, or you can just share how the reflective process has made you feel and how it has changed the way you will practice in the future.
