Introduction
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that benefit the school, work, and life. CASEL (2013) has recognised five interrelated sets of cognitive, affective, and behavioural SEL competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. SEL becomes more and more critical in an increasingly fast-changing and diverse world. According to World Economic Forum (2016), besides the foundational skills such as literacy and numeracy, human beings in the 21st Century should also be equipped with the competencies such as collaboration, problem-solving, creativity, persistence, initiative and curiosity. Research also shows that the more emotionally and socially intelligent a child is, the more likely they will achieve academic success and flourish into healthy, happy, successful adults (Masten et al., 2005). Since these skills can be taught, many schools have introduced SEL programs into the curriculum (Bierman & Motamedi, 2015), such as project-based learning, inquiry-based learning and classroom discussions (World Economic Forum, 2016). Research proves that school-based SEL programs can support and improve students’ relationship to the school, positive behaviour, and academic achievement (Durlak et al., 2011). However, SEL should not only be recognised as a tool in the classroom but also take place in different informal settings (World Economic Forum, 2016).
