Topic: The early modern era in Europe emerged a renewed focus on the individual as an entity with authority, rights, and duties both to him/herself and to society as a whole.


Using the primary and secondary sources of this course, analyze the new conception of the individual in the early modern era, and the accompanying notion of civil rights for women and minorities.

According to writers such as Lipsius and Descartes, and also the writers of the Enlightenment and the Revolutionary era, what should the individual expect?

What could the individual do? What were his or her rights? How did the individual find consolation and justice, truth, and knowledge? Primary sources (not inclusive): Descartes, “Discourse on Method;” Lipsius, “On Constancy,” Locke, “A Letter Concerning Toleration;” The National Assembly, “Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen;” De Gouges, “Declaration of the Rights of Women”3.
