Write an essay addressing the question, “What is the point of public education in the United States? What gets taught and done when schools are closed? What does what schools do and don’t do in the current crisis tell us about the purpose of public education in 2020? What is the essential point of having schools and how has that purpose changed over time?”
We have changed the focus of this unit on the curriculum of schools and what that curriculum tells us about the purpose of public education in the United States to focus especially on what the way schools are responding to the current COVID-19 crisis tells us about their goals and purpose. For a final paper you have multiple ways to explore this topic. For example, you might focus a paper as follows:
- What does what schools do and don’t do in the current crisis tell us about the purpose of public education in 2020?
- What gets taught? What should get taught in public school? (May focus on public school in the U.S. or where you find yourself today.)
- What is the purpose of public schools? How has the purpose changed over time?
Your essay should be about 3-4 pages long, double spaced, in 12pt font, Times New Roman, with one-inch margins, and use a citation style. Please upload your assignment as a Word document or PDF.
Your paper should be organized to prove your perspective of the issue through the use of evidence, specifically, at least one source from The School in the United States, at least two sources not from The School in the United States (e.g. other assigned readings, the New York Times, Chalkbeat, etc.)
