The key aim of this assessment task is to get you to demonstrate and apply your knowledge of some of the major social science approaches to risk, including their particular strengths and weaknesses, which we have learned about over the last 6 weeks.
Discuss your risk topic and identify the weaknesses in the debates in detail (1000 words)
The publications you have reviewed for assessment 2 will have used or advocated and debated particular approaches to understanding, analysing or managing risks related to your topic.
Your task is to identify the approach(s) to understanding, analysing or managing risk being used or advocated and debated in the literature and then identify and discuss the weaknesses (criticisms, limitations) of the risk approach being used or advocated. To be clear, you are being asked to identify strengths and weaknesses in how the approach has been applied to your topic, rather than strengths and weaknesses of the approach in general (although it is likely that there will be significant overlap between these two categories). In this part of the assignment you are being asked to build upon the analysis that you developed in your first assignment.
How could knowledge in the area be advanced? Justify your view (750 words)
This final part of the task must be written in consideration of what you have written in the first part of the essay about the weaknesses (criticisms, limitations) of the approach to risk being used or advocated and debated in the literature. Your task is to present an argument about how the weaknesses or criticisms you identify and discuss could be overcome to advance knowledge in the area of your risk topic.
For example, this might involve you arguing for the take up of a completely different approach to understanding, analysing or managing the risks associated with your topic. Alternatively, it might involve you arguing for certain changes or additions to be made to the risk approach already being taken or advocated, in order to address the weaknesses and limitations or the criticisms of the approach.
Regardless of the specifics of your argument, it needs to be presented and justified (supported) using social science risk literature.
You will be assessed on the following criteria:
the detail and accuracy with which you identify the approach(s) to understanding, analysing or managing risk being used, advocated or debated in the literature;
the extent to which you demonstrate depth of understanding and critical analysis when identifying and discussing the weaknesses (criticisms and limitations) of the risk approach(s) being used or advocated;
the depth and strength of your argument concerning how the weaknesses or criticisms you identify and discuss could be overcome to advance knowledge in the area of your risk topic;
how well you use evidence / references to support your points and arguments;
the scholarliness of your academic writing and referencing.
